English Mock feedback and advice - Q5

I haven't put the mark scheme for Q5 here because it is virtually identical to the mark scheme for Q6. There are just fewer marks available for it!!!

As you move on to the writing section of the exam paper, you need to remember that THERE ARE FEWER MARKS AVAILABLE FOR Q5 THAN FOR Q6.  DO NOT, THEREFORE, WRITE TWICE AS MUCH FOR Q5 AS FOR Q6 JUST BECAUSE YOU PREFER THE MORE CREATIVE STYLE OF WRITING.  I KNOW WHAT YOU ARE UP TO BUT IT WON'T WORK FOR THIS EXAM.

DO Q6 FIRST.

As for Q6, for Q5 you also need to show that you are aware of the form that you are writing in.  In this case, you have been asked to write an ARTICLE for your SCHOOL or COLLEGE magazine.  This means that your FORM is an ARTICLE and your AUDIENCE are your peers.  To acknowledge form, you should have some kind of HEADING.  You don't really need to do any more than this.  You do not need to lay it out like a magazine article by using columns.  You do not need a picture as this is a test of writing, not drawing!

Here are some successful examples for Q5 and a brief explanation of why they are successful.

The above is successful because, although it doesn't have a HEADING and it should, it is very carefully structured throughout.  It uses a variety of paragraph lengths, a variety of sentence lengths and a variety of punctuation, very successfully.  The piece is entertaining and absorbing for the reader and it is an excellent length.

Although the above also needed a HEADING in order to show awareness of FORM, it is an exceptionally well structured piece of writing.  The variety of sentence structures used are impressive as is the use of punctuation, for example ellipsis at the end of the second sentence.  Short sentences and paragraphs are successfully used to create tension and anticipation.  There is also some understated humour which works very well and does not try to be too clever and so hits its mark perfectly.

One thing that is wrong with the above response, though, is that it is TOO LONG.  Two and a half sides of this size handwriting would have been plenty.
